Local SEO is the process of improving a business’s visibility in search results for searches connected to a particular location. It involves work on your website, Google Business Profile, business information, reviews and other elements that help people find and assess a local business.

If someone searches for “car repair Karlovac”, the aim is to increase the chances that they find a relevant garage, check its services and get in touch.

Local SEO is part of broader search engine optimisation, with a particular focus on geographical relevance. It matters when customers visit your premises or your business provides services within a particular area.

To understand how it works, it helps to distinguish between local search intent, the different types of search results and the activities that can improve local visibility.

What makes a search local?

A search has local intent when the location of a business, service or searcher matters to the answer. The search may include a place name, but the location can also be implied by the context.

Consider these examples:

Search query

What is the person likely looking for?

Car repair Stockholm

A garage that provides car repair services in Stockholm.

Car repair near me

A garage close to their current location.

Car repair

They may want a local garage, even without naming a place.

When should I change my engine oil?

Information about car maintenance, regardless of location.

A search does not need to include a city name to have local intent. In its explanation of how location affects search results, Google notes that location helps it return relevant results even when the searcher does not specify a place.

For a garage owner, this means understanding what people need and where the business can meet that need. An article explaining when to change engine oil serves a different purpose from a page offering oil changes in Karlovac. Both can be useful, but each needs a clear role.

Where do local SEO results appear?

People can discover a local business through several types of search results. On Google, the main formats to understand are the local pack, Google Maps and organic website results.

The local pack is a group of business listings displayed alongside a map in search results. People can use these listings to check business information and available contact options.

Google Maps lets people search for businesses on a map, view their profiles and get directions.

Organic website results link to individual pages that match the search, such as a garage’s page describing its repair services.

Search format

What appears?

What can the person find out?

Local pack in Google Search

Selected business profiles alongside a map.

Basic business details, location, ratings and available contact options.

Google Maps

Business locations and profiles.

Where a business is, how to get there and what its profile says about its services.

Organic website results

Web pages relevant to the search.

Service details, terms, expertise and how to make an enquiry.

A Google Business Profile and a website serve different purposes. A profile can help someone quickly check opening hours and contact details. A website gives you more room to explain a service, process or offer.

Local SEO should therefore consider both. The layout and appearance of search results can also vary according to the query and the context of the search.

How does Google rank local businesses?

According to Google’s explanation of local ranking, local results are mainly based on relevance, distance and prominence.

Relevance

Relevance describes how closely a business profile matches what someone is searching for.

Imagine a garage that offers tyre fitting. Clear information about its actual services and an appropriate business category help Google understand the business and match it to relevant searches.

Distance

Distance refers to how far a business is from the person searching. Google uses the location information available to it.

Two people searching for a garage from different parts of the same city may therefore see different local results. A single ranking check captures one location and one moment in time.

Prominence

Prominence refers to how well known a business is. Google lists links to the business, the number of reviews and positive ratings among the information it considers.

These three factors work together. Improvements to your profile, website and other business information need to be considered in that context. They do not guarantee the same position for every search query or every searcher’s location.

What does local SEO involve?

Local SEO brings together activities that give search engines and potential customers a clearer picture of a business. The work needed depends on the starting point, the services offered and the area the business serves.

Google Business Profile

Google Business Profile lets you manage the business information that appears in Google Search and Maps.

Work on a profile includes choosing an appropriate category and providing accurate contact details, opening hours, a business description and relevant photos. This information helps people decide whether the business meets their needs.

For example, someone looking for tyre fitting wants to check whether a garage offers the service, where it is and how to book. The profile should provide clear, current information. Google’s guidelines for representing a business require the information to reflect the actual business accurately.

In a Reddit discussion, a business owner reported that Google was still showing a photo of the old shopfront after the business moved to larger premises. The owner described confusion among customers and later said they had managed to update the displayed photo. After a move, it is worth checking the photos people actually see on your profile as well as the address.

Your website and local content

Your website should explain which services you provide, where you provide them and how someone can take the next step.

For our hypothetical garage, a useful tyre-fitting page could explain how to book, the opening hours, how to reach the premises and what the service involves. Its local relevance comes from useful information connected to the real business.

Use place names where they add meaning. Repeating a phrase such as “car repair Karlovac” throughout a page makes it harder to read. Google’s SEO starter guide identifies excessive keyword repetition as a practice to avoid.

The technical basics matter too: search engines need to be able to access the page, its structure should be clear and it should be easy to use on a phone. Someone who wants to book should be able to find the information they need quickly.

Accurate business information

A business’s name, address and phone number are often referred to as NAP.

These details should be accurate on your website, Google Business Profile and other relevant places where your business is listed.

If a garage moves but some listings still show its old address, customers may receive conflicting information. An inactive phone number can prevent someone from getting in touch even after they have found the business.

In a 2022 Local Search Forum discussion, an author reported that customers using the call button were reaching a different company. The discussion did not establish the cause. The report is a useful reminder that checking contact details can include making a test call directly from the profile.

Keep your information aligned with changes in the business, including a new address, phone number, opening hours or range of services. The priority is to give customers information they can rely on.

Reviews

Reviews help people understand other customers’ experiences. For a garage, they can offer insight into communication, booking and the work carried out.

Managing reviews includes monitoring feedback and responding appropriately. A helpful response to a complaint shows how the business communicates when a problem arises.

Reviews should reflect genuine experiences. Google’s Maps content policies prohibit fake reviews and incentives in exchange for reviews.

Relevant links and mentions

A backlink is a link from another website to yours. For a local business, a relevant source might be a local news website, a trade association or a business partner.

Imagine a local publication interviewing a garage owner about preparing a car for winter and linking to the garage’s website. Readers can learn about the owner’s expertise and explore the services offered.

A business can also be mentioned without receiving a link. A mention and a backlink are different things. Assess their usefulness according to the source, context and information they provide to readers.

What is the difference between local SEO and Google Ads?

Local SEO focuses on organic visibility. Google Ads is paid advertising. A business can use both, with separate goals and performance tracking.

Google Business Profile is a free tool. Professional local SEO services can involve a fee because the work may include analysis, content improvements, technical changes and other activities.

That is different from paying for ads. In its guidance on hiring an SEO, Google explicitly states that advertising does not affect a website’s position in organic search results.

For a garage, the decision about where to invest depends on its goals, demand, current visibility and capacity to take on new customers. Measure advertising and SEO according to what each contributes to the business.

How do you measure local SEO success?

Assess local SEO through visibility, customer interactions and actual business results.

In a 2024 Local Search Forum discussion, a contributor reported a substantial drop in calls for an appliance repair business despite similar average map rankings in tracking reports. The cause was not established. This individual account illustrates why rankings should be considered alongside enquiries and booked work.

Google Business Profile performance data shows views and available interactions, such as website clicks, direction requests and clicks on the call button.

The “calls” metric counts clicks on the call button. You need additional records to establish how many conversations took place, appointments were booked or new customers were acquired. Profile performance data can also include activity associated with Google Ads.

For your website, Google Search Console provides information about search impressions, clicks and queries. This helps you understand which local searches bring people to your content.

Our hypothetical garage could track searches related to tyre fitting, visits to its service page and booked appointments. Comparisons are more useful when they account for the period being measured, seasonality and other changes in the business.

Start by checking whether your profile, website and business details clearly describe what you offer and where you operate. This helps identify specific priorities.
FAQ

Is Google Business Profile the same as local SEO?
Google Business Profile is one part of local SEO. Local optimisation also involves your website, local content, accurate business information, reviews and relevant links. Improving your profile is an important step, but the work needed depends on your wider online presence.

Is local SEO free?
Creating and using a Google Business Profile is free. Updating information yourself takes time, while hiring a specialist, producing content and making technical improvements can involve costs. Paying for those services is separate from paying for Google Ads.

Can I do local SEO myself?
Yes. You can handle some activities yourself. Start by checking your business category, contact details, opening hours, service descriptions and the clarity of the information on your website. Professional support can help when you need to diagnose poor visibility or make more complex technical changes.

Why does a competitor with fewer reviews rank above my business?
The number of reviews is only one of the things Google considers. Local rankings also depend on relevance to the specific query, distance from the searcher and the business’s prominence. Having more reviews does not, on its own, guarantee a higher position.

Why does my business’s ranking change depending on where I search?
Google considers the searcher’s location when displaying local results. The same query from different parts of a city can therefore produce a different order of businesses. One check on your own phone gives you only part of the picture.

Do I need to pay for Google Ads to improve my organic ranking?
No. Paying for Google Ads does not improve your website’s organic position, and you cannot buy a higher position in local search results. Ads can be a separate way to attract customers, with their own budget and performance tracking.

How can I tell whether local SEO brings in new customers?
Track how people find your business and compare that information with actual enquiries, bookings and completed work. Google Business Profile shows certain interactions, but its calls metric counts button clicks rather than completed conversations. To assess the business impact, keep your own records of contacts and new customers.

Programmatic SEO is not for everyone. This needs to be said right away, as it has been sold in recent years as a universal trick for traffic growth. It is only suitable for businesses that have three things: their own data, predictable long-tail demand, and the discipline to keep every single page above a minimum quality threshold. Everything else is a risk, and Google has demonstrated over the past two years just how much that risk can hurt.

The era of generating 10,000 nearly identical pages with just one changed variable is over. Google explicitly declared it as spam in March 2024 under the term scaled content abuse, and has since deindexed hundreds of sites that collectively held tens of millions of monthly visits. Yet, that very same Google continues to rank Zapier, Wise, Zillow, and Tripadvisor across tens of thousands of programmatic pages. The difference between these two groups is the entire point of this text.

What Programmatic SEO actually is

Programmatic SEO is the creation of a large number of pages from a structured database and one or more templates. Instead of manually writing page by page, you define a template and let data populate the variations. A classic example is Zapier and its “[App A] + [App B] integration” pages, which number between 25,000 and 50,000. Each targets a specific low-volume query, and the sum of all of them brings in millions of visits per month.

The keyword here is structure. If your content naturally fits into a spreadsheet where every row can become a separate page with a unique data point, you have a candidate. If not, you don’t. Perform this simple check before anything else.

Three essential conditions

For programmatic SEO to make any sense at all, three things must align. If even one is missing, it’s better not to get involved.

First, a structured dataset with real depth. Not just a name and a one-sentence description, but data that the competition doesn’t have or doesn’t display in the same way. Zillow’s Zestimate, Wise’s live exchange rates, Tripadvisor’s billion reviews. This is what we call a data moat in SEO jargon. A page that can be literally replicated lacks a moat and will collapse during the first serious update.

Second, a predictable long-tail demand pattern. There must be a pattern like “[main term] + [modifier]” with dozens or thousands of variations. An individual variation often gets only 10 to 200 searches per month, which sounds insignificant until you multiply it: 5,000 pages times 30 searches is 150,000 potential monthly visits. The math lies in the aggregation, not in the individual page.

Third, content that remains useful even when generated from a template. This is the hardest part and where most fail. A template must not produce thin content. Each page must answer a specific query or perform a task: a comparison, a calculation, or a localized list. Aleyda Solis, one of the most prominent SEO consultants, formulates this clearly: before generating, you need to define the rules that every page must satisfy—for example, a minimum number of insights, examples, or data points. Without this rule, you get thousands of empty pages dragging the entire site down.

Who are the ideal candidates?

Five types of businesses consistently extract the most value from programmatic SEO.

Marketplaces, aggregators, and directories are natural candidates because their page structure is already built into their business model. Tripadvisor has hundreds of millions of indexed URLs and over 200 million monthly organic visits, with its moat being more than a billion user reviews that refresh themselves. G2 and Capterra do the same with software comparisons. Indeed does it with job listings through “[position] jobs in [city]”.

Real estate and classifieds profit from feeds that update in real time. Zillow has around 5.2 million pages and gets roughly 80 percent of its traffic from organic search. These pages cannot be copied because the Zestimate, walk score, and school ratings come from their own algorithms.

Fintech and tools with calculators. Wise has built over 260,000 pages around currency pairs, money transfer corridors, and SWIFT codes, using their own CMS that pulls live exchange rates and localized fees. The currency conversion pages alone reportedly bring in tens of millions of monthly visits.

B2B SaaS with an integration or template catalog is currently the strongest new category. Zapier is the canonical example. Canva has around 24,000 English programmatic pages that convert at an impressive 18 percent because the product itself is embedded into the page: you land on a “[design type] template” and edit it immediately. Notion and Webflow pull off the same trick with community templates.

Local services and multi-location franchises. 50 services times 200 cities equals 10,000 pages. But, and this is a big but, without actual local data (prices, local testimonials, real address on a map), this quickly turns into doorway spam that Google penalizes.

Notice the pattern across all success stories. The page is not just a keyword waiting to rank; it is a task being performed. Wise converts currency. Zillow shows houses in your neighborhood. Canva opens the editor. Furthermore, the content isn’t refreshed manually, but through APIs, databases, and user-generated content. This is architecture, not copywriting.

What you must have before you start

Here we move from theory to resources.

Database size. The industry consensus is a minimum of around 1,000 unique rows of data, ideally 10,000 or more, where each row carries multiple dimensions (description, statistics, comparison, reviews). A thin database yields thin pages, without exception.

Domain authority. This is probably the most critical filter that gets skipped most often. New domains can only launch in extremely low-competition niches and with a slow introduction of pages, never all at once.

Technical infrastructure. Dynamic page generation (Webflow plus Whalesync plus Airtable for a no-code approach, or Next.js plus a database for larger projects), segmented sitemaps (never a single one with 50,000 URLs), schema markup based on page type, and internal linking where every page links to 8 to 15 related pages and receives 5 to 10 internal links. A practical rule of thumb: if less than 40 percent of your pages are indexed, stop scaling and run an audit.

Team and time. A lean project requires at least three people: an SEO strategist, a developer (or a no-code expert), and a content editor. A solopreneur can manage on their own up to about 2,000 pages. In terms of timeline, expect 10 to 20 weeks to go live and 6 to 9 months for a measurable return. Long-tail impressions appear within a few weeks, but conversion traffic only starts showing up between the fourth and sixth month. Anyone expecting results in a month should not begin.

Who is it NOT worth it for?

For some businesses, programmatic SEO is simply a bad idea, and it’s better to know this before spending serious money.

It’s not worth it if you don’t have a data moat, meaning all your data is publicly available and easily replicated. It’s not worth it in YMYL niches (Your Money or Your Life – health, finance, law) if there is no demonstrable expertise behind the content. It’s not worth it on a new domain without authority. And it is almost never worth it if you plan mass AI production without human review of every page. In an analysis of 79,000 sites affected by the March 2024 update, Originality.ai found that every single deindexed site had AI-generated content, and half of them were 90 to 100 percent machine-written.

The most famous case is HouseFresh, an air purifier review site. They lost about 91 percent of their traffic after March 2024, dropping from thousands of daily visits to a few hundred, despite doing actual, manual hands-on product testing. Forbes went through its own scandal: Lars Lofgren exposed that the so-called Forbes Advisor, which generated tens of millions of visits through affiliate content, received a manual penalty from Google in late 2024. G2, the software review giant, lost around 80 percent of its organic traffic throughout 2024 and 2025. The takeaway is harsh: even large UGC moats won’t save you if the pages don’t add synthesis above raw reviews.

According to an agency case study, one SaaS team published 8,400 programmatic pages using a pure template and decent keyword research. After three months, exactly 312 pages ranked. The other 8,000 were indexed but invisible, deindexed, or stuck in the “Crawled, currently not indexed” status. This isn’t a failure of programmatic SEO as a method; it’s a failure of quality, and that distinction matters.

The typical mistakes that kill projects are always the same: duplicate content across templates, 50,000 URLs published overnight, orphan pages without internal links, generating before validating demand, and AI without human oversight. Solis adds another often forgotten mistake: pages are built in isolation and don’t connect well with the rest of the site, so they never build topical authority.

How AI Search is changing the equation

This is the part that has completely shifted the calculation in 2025 and 2026, and without which any text on programmatic SEO becomes obsolete.

Google AI Overviews are eating up clicks on informational queries. The latest Ahrefs study on 300,000 keywords shows that the presence of an AI Overview reduces the click-through rate (CTR) for the first position by 58 percent, measured in December 2025. A year and a half earlier, that drop was 34.5 percent, meaning the trend is moving in the wrong direction. Amsive measured a drop of about 20 percent on unbranded queries across 700,000 keywords, but—and this is important—a plus of 18.68 percent on branded ones. Similarweb states that 83 percent of searches with an AI Overview end up without a single click.

What does this mean for programmatic SEO? Generic “[service] in [city]” pages that target pure informational intent lose the most. Transactional and comparative queries, exactly the ones covered by the best programmatic templates (comparisons, integrations, “best X for Y”), are relatively protected because AI Overviews rarely close them off completely.

The other side of the story involves ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Claude. Traffic from AI tools increased multi-fold during 2025, measured in hundreds of percent. The volume is still small compared to Google, but the conversion rate is incredible: visitors from ChatGPT convert at around 15.9 percent, and from Perplexity at 10.5 percent, compared to 1.76 percent for traditional Google organic search. A single visitor from an AI tool is worth several times more than one from Google.

And which pages do these tools cite? Lists, “best X” overviews, comparisons, product and integration pages, and detailed how-to guides. Perplexity cites an average of about 22 sources per answer and gives a strong preference to content updated within the last 30 days. This aligns almost perfectly with the types of programmatic pages that already work. A generic local page is invisible to AI tools. A comparison page full of proprietary data is not.

The Verdict: Products, not pages

The real question for 2026 is not “how many pages can this client generate.” The question is “does this business have the data and editorial discipline to make every single page look like a small product.” If the answer is not a firm yes, programmatic SEO is just an expensive way to harm yourself.

The easiest sells today are B2B SaaS with an integration or template catalog, marketplaces with reviews, fintech and real estate with live data feeds, and multi-location franchises that possess genuine local differentiators. The hardest sells, the ones that should be politely turned down, are affiliate niche sites, YMYL without expertise, new domains without a moat, and anyone planning conveyor-belt AI content without a human touch.

If you have to explain what you are building to a client in a single sentence, let it sound like this: 2,000 pages where each solves a task and carries a data point the competition doesn’t have, each passed through a human review, and none scraped from others. The goal is not the number of pages. The goal is a defensive moat that survives Google’s updates and, along the way, becomes a source cited by ChatGPT and Perplexity.

Programmatic SEO is not dead. Its lazy version is dead. And for businesses that hold real data, it is actually less competitive now than before, because a good chunk of the market has just been wiped out of the index.

Picture this. Someone in your city just burst a pipe. They grab their phone, type “plumber New York” and within three seconds Google shows them a map with three businesses, ratings, and phone numbers. One has 52 reviews and a five-star average. They call that one.

If your business is not on that map, someone else will take the job. Today, tomorrow, every single day.

That, in one sentence, is why Google Business Profile exists.

What is Google Business Profile?

Google Business Profile (abbreviated as GBP, formerly known as Google My Business or GMB) is a free tool that gives your business visibility on Google Search and Google Maps.

Once you set it up and verify it, Google displays your business in local search results alongside key information: your address, opening hours, phone number, photos, and customer reviews. All of this without the potential client ever needing to open your website.

The tool is completely free. No subscription, no hidden fees. Google charges for advertising through Google Ads, but the profile itself and all its features cost nothing.

The difference between Google Business Profile and a website

This is a question small business owners ask often, so it is worth addressing directly.

A website is your “home” on the internet. You control everything there, from design to content. But someone has to actively visit your website, which means they need to already know you exist or find you through search.

Google Business Profile works differently. It shows up for people searching for anyone who does what you do, in your city or neighbourhood. In other words, it reaches people who do not know you yet.

For tradespeople and local service businesses, GBP often generates more relevant enquiries than their own website. A hairdresser in New York does not need to rank on the first page of Google for “hairdresser” globally. They need to be visible when someone in New York types “hairdresser near me”. Those are two completely different problems, and GBP solves the one that actually fills the calendar.

It is also worth framing it this way: GBP is usually described as a tool for your visibility, but it is equally accurate to call it a tool that exploits your competitors’ invisibility. At the local level, the vast majority of small businesses and sole traders either have no profile at all, or set one up years ago with no reviews, no photos and no updated opening hours. You do not need to be exceptional. You just need to be the one who made the effort. That is a different motivation from “improve your visibility”, but a much more concrete one.

Both tools complement each other and you do not need to choose between them. But if you are deciding where to invest your first hour, GBP puts you on the map, literally.

How GBP appears in Google results: the Local Pack

When someone types a query with local intent (“dentist New York”, “cafe near me”, “accountant New York”), Google often displays a special block of results above the standard organic links. This block is called the Local Pack, sometimes the “3-pack” because it shows three businesses.

The Local Pack displays:

business name and primary category

rating and number of reviews

address and opening hours

a button to call or get directions

Clicking on one of those businesses opens a detailed profile, all within Google, without going to a website. For someone looking for an urgent service, that is more than enough to decide who to call.

If your business is not in the Local Pack, you effectively do not exist for that search. Regardless of how good your website looks.

What determines who appears?

Google uses three main signals:

relevance (does your profile match the search query)

proximity (are you physically close to the person searching)

prominence (how many reviews you have, how active and up-to-date the profile is)

An optimised Google Business Profile directly influences all three.

How to set up Google Business Profile step by step

The whole process takes around 15 to 20 minutes, plus a few days waiting for verification. No technical knowledge required.

Step 1: sign in to a Google account

You need an active Gmail or Google Account. A business email separate from your personal one is recommended (e.g. info@yourbusiness.com), but it is not mandatory.

Step 2: go to google.com/business

Click “Manage profile” or “Add your business”. Google walks you through a setup wizard that is intuitive enough to follow without any instructions.

Step 3: enter your business name and category

The name must be your actual business name, without adding keywords like “New York hairdresser cheap best”. Google penalises this with profile suspension. The category matters more than it seems because it directly affects which searches you appear in. If you are a dentist, choose “Dental clinic”, not just “Doctor”.

Step 4: choose your business type

There are three situations here:

Physical location (restaurant, salon, clinic) where clients come to you: enter the address

Mobile service (plumber, electrician, cleaning) where you go to clients: choose “service area”, your address is then not shown publicly

Combined: clients come to you and you also go to them (e.g. a salon that also offers home visits) – there is a hybrid option for this too

It is worth highlighting that mobile service businesses are systematically underrepresented on GBP. Many plumbers, electricians and similar tradespeople assume the profile is only for businesses with a shop or office. The direct consequence is that in those categories the Local Pack is less competitive than in categories with physical locations, which means less competition for anyone who sets things up properly.

Step 5: enter your contact details

Phone number and website. Double-check they are accurate and identical to what appears on your website. Inconsistent data across different places confuses Google and negatively affects your local ranking.

Step 6: verify your profile

Verification proves to Google that the business is real and that you manage it. Without it, the profile does not appear in results.

The most common method is a postcard with a PIN code sent to the business address, arriving within 5 to 14 days. Faster methods via phone or email exist but are not available to everyone. If more than 14 days have passed with no postcard, you can request a new one through the profile dashboard.

That wait feels like an administrative nuisance, but look at it this way too: that small step is precisely what causes enough people to abandon the process. In practice it means there are fewer verified competitors in your category than there would otherwise be. Patience here has direct business value.

What to optimise after setting up

Setting up the profile is just the beginning. Most business owners enter the basic details and stop there. That is exactly where the difference between a profile that brings in clients and one that merely exists starts to show.

Business description

You have 750 characters. Describe what you do, for whom and in which cities or regions you operate. Work in the terms your customers actually search for, without forcing it.

Secondary categories

Beyond your primary category, you can add secondary ones. A mechanic who also services air conditioning units can add “Air conditioning repair shop” and appear for both searches.

Photos

Profiles with photos get significantly more clicks than those without, according to Google’s own documentation. Add a photo of the exterior (so clients recognise the place when they arrive), interior, services or work in progress. A logo and cover photo are the bare minimum.

Opening hours

Update them every time something changes, including public holidays and annual leave. A client who arrives because the profile says “open” and finds the doors locked is not leaving five stars.

Reviews

Reviews are one of the strongest signals for the Local Pack. Ask satisfied clients to leave a review, in person or via a QR code that links directly to your review page. Reply to every review, positive and negative. Google tracks activity, and potential clients read the responses.

One thing most advice skips: the effect of reviews is not linear. The difference between zero and ten reviews, in terms of both ranking and visitor trust, is far greater than the difference between forty and fifty. The first few reviews build the signal that your business actually exists and operates. A profile with zero reviews is treated by Google with a degree of scepticism regardless of everything else you have done. For a business just setting up its profile, the first ten reviews are not “part of the strategy”. They are the condition for the strategy to work at all.

Posts

GBP has a posts feature, similar to a social media update. You can publish a promotion, a new service or a note about holiday opening hours. Posts do not rank directly, but they signal to Google that the profile is active.

When Google Business Profile is not enough on its own

GBP is the foundation of local visibility, but it is not the whole story.

If you are in a more competitive segment, or if your competitors already have well-optimised profiles with plenty of reviews, simply creating a profile will not be enough to overtake them. That is when local citations, consistent data across all online directories, locally focused website content and technical SEO come into play.

Those are the elements covered by local SEO as a complete strategy. We will be writing about each one separately in this blog.

For now, if you do not have a GBP set up yet, it is one hour of effort that pays back many times over.

FAQ

Can I have a GBP without a website?
You can. A website is not a requirement for creating a profile. That said, a profile linked to a website comes across as more credible and gives Google more context to work with.

What if my business already appears on Google Maps but I never created a profile?
Google sometimes automatically creates profiles based on data pulled from other websites. This happens more often than people realise, and there is a hidden problem with it: your business may already exist on Maps with an incorrect address, an old phone number or the wrong category taken from some outdated directory. Until you claim ownership, that profile works against you because it is visible but showing data you do not control. The issue is not just “not being on Google” but “being on Google incorrectly”. Search for your business on Google or Maps and click “Is this your business?” to claim it and correct the details.

How long does verification take?
The postcard usually arrives within 5 to 14 days. If more than 14 days have passed, you can request a new one through the dashboard.

Do I need a physical address for GBP?
No. If you work on-site and travel to clients, you can choose “service area” and keep your address hidden from the public.

Can I have multiple profiles for one business?
Generally no. Google does not allow it and duplicate profiles can lead to suspension. If you have multiple physical locations, each one can have its own profile.

Most business owners believe it’s enough to simply “put something online” and wait for visitors to flood in. Reality hits hard. Without SEO, attracting traffic is difficult, if not impossible.

But what do people actually need? SEO agencies offer a wide range of services. Are they all necessary, and is there perhaps something missing from the offer?

As the owner of an SEO agency, I’ve identified five essential services that every serious SEO company should provide. Without these, your SEO strategy is like a house without a foundation—it might look good on paper, but it won’t stand the test of time.

SEO audit and technical optimization

A colleague once said, “Technical SEO is like the plumbing in your house—nobody notices it until something starts leaking.” And it’s absolutely true!

Every serious SEO campaign needs to start with a thorough SEO audit. Think of it as a health check-up for your website. Experts examine your site’s “vital signs” and look for anything that could be holding back your search rankings.

Last year, I worked with a client whose website looked flawless on the surface, yet it just couldn’t rank well. After a detailed audit, we discovered major issues with duplicate content and URL structure, problems the owner would never have noticed alone. Once we fixed them, their traffic jumped by 43% in just two months!

What should a thorough SEO audit include?

Page loading speed – This has become absolutely critical. Studies show that 53% of users abandon websites that take longer than 3 seconds to load. Google knows this, which is why site speed is a key ranking factor.

Mobile-friendliness – Who doesn’t use their phone to browse these days? With over 80% of all searches coming from mobile devices, Google now prioritizes your site’s mobile version when ranking results.

URL structure and navigation – Confusing URLs are like bad road signs—neither users nor Google will know where they’re headed or what to expect at the end.

Duplicate content – This is a common mistake. If the same product description appears dozens of times, search engines won’t know which page to rank.

Meta data – Title tags, meta descriptions, and headings act like signals telling Google, “Hey, this is important!” Without them, Google is left guessing what your page is about.

According to Ahrefs, a staggering 90.63% of websites have at least one technical SEO issue. That’s like 9 out of 10 cars on the road having a mechanical problem—pretty alarming, isn’t it?

Keyword Research and Content Strategy

“Content is king”—it’s a phrase you’ve probably heard a million times, and while it’s become a cliché, it’s still absolutely true. But it’s not enough to just throw some text on a page and hope for the best.

You can have excellent, in-depth articles, but that doesn’t guarantee visitors. The problem arises if you’re writing about topics no one cares about. That’s why thorough keyword research and aligning your content with what people are actually searching for is so important.

Keyword research isn’t just about dry data mining—it’s about understanding the psychology of your potential clients. What are their pain points? What do they want to know? How do they phrase their questions?

What does effective keyword research and content strategy involve?

Finding relevant keywords – For example, a client had a category called “wireless speakers,” but people were mostly searching for “Bluetooth speakers.” Simply changing the category name led to a spike in visits.

Competitor analysis – Why reinvent the wheel? Take a look at what your successful competitors are doing and learn from their strategies. You might even discover a golden niche by analyzing keywords your competitors aren’t targeting.

Understanding user intent – This is crucial! Someone searching for “how to fix a washing machine” has a completely different intent than someone looking up “buy a new washing machine.” Your content needs to match the right intent.

Creating a content strategy – This isn’t just a list of blog topics. It’s a comprehensive plan that defines what types of content you need, who you’re creating it for, with what goals, and when to publish.

Building backlinks and off-page optimization

In the world of SEO, backlinks are your votes of confidence. They tell Google how valued and trustworthy your site is.

Off-page optimization is everything you do outside your website to improve its ranking. The most important aspect is building high-quality backlinks.

What does effective backlink building involve?

Analyzing existing links – Links from questionable websites can damage your reputation. Plus, over time, your site can lose valuable backlinks.

Studying the competition – If someone is linking to your competitors, why not try to get the same link for yourself?

Creating link-worthy content – This is the toughest strategy. Instead of begging for links, create something so valuable that people want to link to you on their own. In-depth industry research, breaking news, or even controversial topics make for highly shareable content.

Guest posting – Writing for other relevant websites is a great way to build authority and earn high-quality backlinks.

A single link from an authoritative website is worth more than a hundred links from low-quality directories. According to Moz, the quality of the domain linking to you has a much greater impact on rankings than the sheer number of links.

Local SEO

If you have a physical location or serve a specific geographic area, local SEO isn’t optional, it’s a must!

According to Google, 46% of all searches have local intent. Even more impressive, 88% of people who search for a local business on their phone visit or call that business within 24 hours! That’s an incredible conversion rate.

What does effective local SEO involve?

Google Business optimization – This is absolutely fundamental. Every local business needs a fully completed Google Business profile with reviews.

Local keywords – People often add a location to their searches: “hairdresser Zagreb center,” “pizza delivery Rijeka,” or “dentist Split Žnjan.” Your content needs to include these local terms.

NAP consistency – NAP stands for Name, Address, and Phone. These details must be exactly the same across all platforms.

Local reviews – These are worth their weight in gold! Encourage your customers to leave reviews and make sure to respond to them.

Analytics, monitoring, and reporting

Without tracking results, SEO is like driving blindfolded, you might be heading in the right direction, or you might not. A quality SEO agency doesn’t just implement strategies; it continually monitors their effectiveness and makes adjustments as needed.

What does effective SEO analytics involve?

Setting up tracking tools – Google Analytics, Search Console, and other specialized tools are essential. Without them, you’re blind to what’s happening on your website.

Defining key performance indicators – What do you actually want to achieve? More traffic? More inquiries? More sales? Different goals require different metrics.

Regularly tracking rankings – You might be number one for a certain keyword, but is that keyword actually bringing you customers?

Analyzing user behavior – It’s not enough just to get visitors to your site—you need to know what they do once they arrive. Measuring your conversion rate is essential.

Transparent reporting – A good SEO expert will show you exactly what you’re getting for your money, without complicated jargon or hiding behind confusing metrics.

How do you choose the right SEO agency?

After years of working in this industry and collaborating with various agencies, here are a few tips for choosing the right SEO agency:

Look for transparency – If an agency promises you the #1 spot on Google in a month, run for the hills! A good SEO expert will be honest about what’s possible and realistic timelines.

Check their experience in your niche – SEO for an e-commerce site is completely different from SEO for a law firm. An agency with experience in your industry already understands the specific challenges and opportunities.

Ask about communication – Will you receive regular reports? Who is your main point of contact? How quickly do they respond to your questions? Poor communication is often the first sign of trouble.

Think about a long-term partnership – SEO isn’t a sprint, it’s a marathon. Agencies that emphasize long-term collaboration are usually focused on sustainable results, not quick fixes that could hurt your site in the long run.

A good SEO agency is worth its weight in gold.

Unlike paid ads that stop bringing traffic the moment you stop paying, good SEO keeps working for you for months and even years.

The five key services we’ve covered, technical SEO, content strategy, backlink building, local SEO, and analytics, together form the foundation of a successful SEO strategy. Neglecting any one of these can seriously limit your results.

If you’re looking for an SEO agency, make sure they offer a comprehensive approach that covers all five key services. And remember, SEO isn’t a one-off project, it’s an ongoing process that, when done right, can transform your online presence and drive sustainable growth for your business.

And if you’ve already hired an SEO agency that doesn’t provide all these services, it might be time to talk about expanding your strategy. In today’s competitive digital world, a half-hearted approach to SEO simply isn’t enough.

Local search engine optimization (local SEO) has become one of the most effective strategies for businesses looking to capture the attention of customers in their immediate vicinity.

Even if you already perform well in broader, organic search results, optimizing for local search results can be a game changer, especially for small and mid-sized companies aiming to connect with nearby consumers. In an era when “near me” searches on Google have skyrocketed, local SEO is a powerful way to increase visibility, drive foot traffic, and ultimately boost revenue.

Below, we’ll explore what local SEO is, why it’s important, how it works, and how to create a winning local SEO strategy that helps your business be more visible in your local area.

What is local SEO and why does it matter?

Local SEO is a subset of search engine optimization (SEO) that focuses on improving your business’s visibility in local search results.

Unlike traditional SEO, which aims to rank your website for broad, often global search terms, local SEO zeroes in on queries with local intent. For example, phrases such as “best coffee shop near me” or “plumber in [city name]” reflect users who are actively seeking services or products in their vicinity.

This distinction is important because nearly half of all Google searches include local intent, according to recent statistics.

Search engines like Google have adapted their algorithms (often referred to as the “local algorithm”) to deliver the most relevant local businesses to these users. Optimizing for these local searches can lead to higher conversion rates, because people who search for “local products” or “services and local” solutions typically have immediate purchasing intent.

How can local SEO help small businesses?

For small businesses with limited marketing budgets, local SEO is a cost-effective and powerful approach to reach new and existing customers. By focusing on local search engine optimization, you can:

Increase Visibility in Local Search Results
Showing up in the local pack—usually the top section of Google’s local results—can dramatically improve click-through rates (CTR). Appearing in this local pack not only enhances your credibility but also directs more qualified leads to your website or physical location.

Drive Foot Traffic and Phone Calls
Customers searching for products or services locally are often ready to make a purchase or hire a service. If your business shows up at the top of local search results, you’re more likely to get direct phone calls, online inquiries, and walk-in traffic.

Boost Your Local SEO ROI
Local SEO efforts are often more targeted, meaning you’re appealing to a smaller audience but with higher intent. This focused approach can improve return on investment (ROI) as you avoid spending resources on broad keywords that might not yield qualified leads.

Build Brand Awareness and Credibility
Being visible in local searches sends a strong signal to potential customers that your business is established and trusted. This leads to more brand recognition in your community over time.

What type of businesses can local SEO help?

Local SEO is versatile. It can benefit:

Brick-and-Mortar Stores: Restaurants, boutiques, salons, and other physical shops rely on foot traffic and can significantly increase in-store visits through local search optimization.

Service-Area Businesses: Plumbers, electricians, HVAC technicians, and similar services often serve multiple neighborhoods. Optimizing for location-specific keywords helps them appear in searches across different local areas.

Professional Service Providers: Lawyers, doctors, accountants, and consultants who rely on a local client base can use local SEO to stand out and attract qualified leads.

Online Businesses Targeting Specific Locations: Even if you don’t have a physical storefront, you may still cater to audiences in defined regions. Local SEO can help you compete effectively in those areas.

Understanding local SEO ranking factors

Google and other search engines use a variety of local SEO ranking factors to determine which businesses to display in local results. Some of these critical factors include:

Proximity
How close the user is to your business location. If someone types in a query with local intent (e.g., “pizza near me”), Google prioritizes businesses within a reasonable distance.

Relevance
How accurately your business listing or website content matches the user’s search terms. Using location-specific and relevant local keywords in your metadata, content, and Google Business Profile is crucial.

Prominence
The overall authority and credibility of your business, both online and offline. Reviews, local citations (mentions of your business name, address, phone number), and inbound local links (from reputable local organizations or news sites) all boost prominence.

NAP Consistency
Maintaining consistent Name, Address, and Phone (NAP) information across directories, social media, and your own website. Inconsistent listings can confuse search engines and lower your local rankings.

Reviews and Ratings
Positive reviews on your Google Business Profile and other platforms like Yelp not only affect user decisions but also serve as a ranking factor for local SEO. Encouraging customers to leave feedback helps bolster your local presence.

Building a local SEO strategy

Optimize your Google Business profile

One of the most critical steps in local search optimization is to claim and verify your Google Business Profile (formerly known as Google My Business). This free tool allows you to:

Add Accurate Business Information: Make sure your business name, address, and phone number are correct. Include business hours, photos of your location or products, and a detailed description of your services.

Engage with Customer Reviews: Responding to feedback—both positive and negative—shows local customers that you care about their experience. Reviews on your Google Business listing also act as an important local ranking factor.

Use Google Maps Integration: Once verified, your local listing can appear on Google Maps, guiding customers right to your storefront.

On-page SEO and local content

While local SEO often focuses on external factors like citations and listings, on-page SEO remains vital:

Target Local Keywords: Incorporate location-based terms into your page titles, headings, meta descriptions, and throughout the body of your content. For example, if you’re a dentist in Los Angeles, using “dentist in Los Angeles” in your title and headings can enhance your local relevance.

Create Location-Specific Landing Pages: If you serve multiple areas, dedicate a unique page for each location to help search engines understand your coverage.

Add Schema Markup: Structured data markup (like LocalBusiness schema) helps search engines interpret your address, phone number, and operating hours, potentially improving your local search ranking.

Local citation building and directories

Citations are mentions of your business’s basic information on other websites, including local business directories and industry-specific platforms:

Claim Listings in Relevant Directories: Websites like Yelp, TripAdvisor, and industry-specific directories can help you reach more local searchers.

Ensure Consistent NAP Information: Using the exact same business name, address, and phone number across all platforms reinforces trust and credibility with search engines.

Leverage Industry Associations: If you belong to a local chamber of commerce or professional organization, they might include a link to your site—a valuable local link building opportunity.

Local link building

Link building remains an integral part of SEO. For local SEO, it’s important to focus on building local relevance:

Partner with Complementary Businesses: If you own a gym, for example, you could collaborate with a local health food store to exchange content, referrals, or special offers—earning backlinks from each other’s websites.

Sponsor Local Events or Charities: This can generate media coverage, community goodwill, and inbound local links from event pages or news outlets covering the event.

Guest Posting on Local Blogs: Contributing valuable content to community websites or hyper-local newspapers can help establish you as an expert in local searchers’ eyes.

Essential local SEO tools

Google Business Profile

A free local SEO tool for managing your business listing in Google, essential for showing up on Google Maps and local pack results.

Moz Local

Helps distribute your business information across multiple directories, ensuring citation consistency.

BrightLocal

Offers a suite of features including rank tracking, citation management, and review monitoring.

SEMrush or Ahrefs

These comprehensive SEO platforms can also apply to local keyword research and competitor analysis, although they are not exclusively local SEO tools.

Making local SEO a priority

Local SEO is a fundamental strategy that helps businesses be more visible to the right customers—those searching for solutions in their immediate vicinity. By focusing on local search engine optimization, you build stronger connections within your community, gain qualified leads, and ultimately increase revenue. From setting up your Google Business Profile and encouraging customer reviews to perfecting on-page SEO and maintaining consistent citations across local business directories, every effort you invest can pay off significantly in the form of higher visibility and trust.

Whether you’re running a restaurant, a plumbing service, or an e-commerce store targeting a specific region, local SEO can deliver substantial benefits.

It levels the playing field against larger competitors, helps you rank for local queries, and secures your place at the top of local searches. Start implementing a comprehensive local SEO strategy today, and watch as your local business thrives in both online and offline spaces.

Backlinks are an integral part of search engine optimization (SEO), and they remain one of the most influential ranking factors used by search engines like Google.

In simple terms, a backlink is a link created when one website links to another. This concept has been central to how the PageRank algorithm (developed by Google’s co-founders Larry Page and Sergey Brin) evaluates the relevance and authority of a web page. Because backlinks are links pointing to your content from external domains, they function as votes of confidence. The more high-quality backlinks (especially from high-authority sites) you have, the more trust and visibility your website can gain in search engine results pages (SERP).

Despite the many changes in Google’s algorithm, backlinks have retained their value in the online marketing world. Let’s explore what backlinks are, why backlinks are so important, how to build a strong backlink profile, and what best practices you should follow for long-term success.

What are backlinks?

A backlink is a reference from one web page to another. If another site finds your content valuable or relevant enough to cite, they link back to your page as a source or additional reading.

For instance, if a reputable health website writes an article about nutrition and references a research-based article on your site, that mention will include a link—this link is the value of a backlink.

From an SEO perspective, backlinks are crucial because search engines use them to gauge a site’s authority, trust, and relevance. A website with numerous authoritative incoming links is more likely to rank higher than one without, assuming all other factors like on-page SEO, technical SEO, and content quality are consistent.

Why backlinks matter for traffic?

Backlinks can improve your position in search engine ranking, leading to more organic visitors. They also serve as direct pathways: readers on other sites can click those links and point to your website, sending referral traffic your way.

According to a 2023 study published in a prominent search engine journal, websites with high-quality backlinks tend to generate significantly more traffic compared to those with fewer or lower-quality links. This underscores the importance of backlinks in driving both credibility and visits.

Understanding backlinks in SEO

How backlinks influence search rankings

When Google Search (or any other search engine) evaluates a site, one of the things search engines view is the site’s overall link profile—specifically, how many quality backlinks it has and from which sources. Sites that link to high-authority domains and are themselves recommended by trusted sources are seen as more credible. This relationship between linking domains, anchor text, and domain authority has a direct bearing on your search rankings.

PageRank Algorithm: Introduced in Google’s early days, the PageRank algorithm assigned a score to pages based on the number of backlinks and the authority of those links. While it has evolved significantly, the core principle remains.

Backlinks are important for building trust

Having a strong backlink portfolio is akin to having multiple endorsements from industry experts. Backlinks in SEO are essentially signals telling the search engine that your content has credibility and that others vouch for its quality. This leads to:

Higher positions in organic search results

Greater authority and trust among website owners and potential customers

Improved brand visibility and perceived expertise in your niche

Avoiding misconceptions: Quality vs. quantity

A common mistake is assuming that the total number of backlinks is all that matters. Search engines like Google have become sophisticated in identifying unnatural or spammy practices.

Toxic backlinks from link farms or irrelevant websites can actually hurt your SEO efforts. Instead of seeking out thousands of low-quality mentions, acquire backlinks from reputable, high-authority sites to truly enhance your ranking potential.

Types of backlinks

Editorial backlinks

Editorial backlinks are often considered one of the most powerful forms of high-quality backlinks. These are naturally earned when your content is cited by publishers, news outlets, or authoritative blogs.

For example, a resource page referencing your in-depth guide is an example of an editorial backlink. Because editorial links are earned based on merit, they carry significant weight in search engine optimization (SEO).

Dofollow vs. nofollow backlinks

Follow Backlinks: These pass “link juice” to your site. In other words, they transfer authority.

Nofollow Backlinks: These include an attribute that tells internet bots (web crawlers) not to consider them for ranking signals. However, they can still offer value in terms of referral traffic and brand exposure.

Relevant backlinks

Relevant backlinks come from sites or pages within your industry. For example, if you run a tech blog, getting a link from a leading technology publication signals to search engines that the backlink is highly pertinent. Relevance is crucial because it reinforces your site’s position within a specific niche.

Toxic backlinks

Toxic backlinks may come from spammy directories, link networks, or low-quality sites created solely for SEO manipulation. Google’s Penguin update specifically targeted unnatural link-building tactics.

If you accumulate a substantial number of toxic links, your site may incur a penalty, dropping drastically in the search engine results page (SERP).

Regular backlink analysis using tools like Google Search Console or third-party SEO tools (e.g., SEMrush, Ahrefs, Moz) can help you identify and disavow problematic links.

Other backlink types

Guest Blogging Links: Earned when you write articles for other websites and include a link to your own.

Broken Link Building: A strategy where you find competitors’ backlinks (or websites linking to dead pages), then suggest your content as an alternative.

Resource Pages: Lists or curated links in a particular industry, where your site may be featured as a valuable resource.

How to build a strong backlink profile

Guest blogging and thought leadership

Despite the ever-changing SEO landscape, guest blogging remains a tried-and-true tactic. When you contribute high-quality articles to reputable platforms, you establish thought leadership and often receive a backlink to your website in return.

Combine this with pillar content—in-depth, authoritative pieces on your own site—to become a go-to source. Readers and high-authority sites will be more inclined to link back to content that’s comprehensive and well-researched.

Broken link building

Broken link building capitalizes on the fact that many sites have outdated or missing content. You can track dead links on competitors’ websites or in your industry, then politely reach out to webmasters, suggesting they replace those links with your relevant content.

This tactic not only helps them maintain a good user experience but also secures new backlinks for your site.

Creating evergreen and shareable content

Content that remains relevant over a long period—“evergreen content”—naturally attracts more links over time. Comprehensive guides, infographics, and case studies are examples of link-worthy content. They also perform well on social media, generating social signals that can indirectly support your SEO.

By clustering related topics together (content clusters), you can strategically organize your articles to reinforce each other, which also improves your internal linking structure.

Influencer outreach and social signals

Partnering with influencers and industry experts can significantly boost your content’s visibility. When these influencers share or link back to your pages, you gain an influx of referral traffic and potential brand advocates. Meanwhile, a solid presence on social media platforms generates social bookmarks, retweets, likes, and more—signals that can further validate your content’s authority in the eyes of search engines.

Monitoring and maintaining your backlink profile

Even after you build backlinks, regular maintenance is essential. Perform routine backlink analysis using Google Analytics, Google Search Console, or premium SEO tools to identify potential toxic backlinks.

If you find such links, consider using Google’s Disavow Tool or contacting the webmaster to remove them. Staying proactive will help preserve or improve your domain authority and overall search engine ranking.

Measuring and analyzing backlink success

Key Performance Indicators (KPIs)

Link Metrics: Keep track of domain authority, page authority, and anchor text distribution.

Traffic Analysis: Monitor spikes or declines in referral and organic traffic.

User Engagement: Observe metrics like bounce rate and click-through rate (CTR) to gauge content relevance.

Tools for backlink analysis

Beyond Google Search Console and Google Analytics, paid solutions like Ahrefs, SEMrush, and Moz offer in-depth backlink data, including competitor analysis and gap analysis. These platforms also provide you with insight into your website’s linking domains, anchor text usage, and the total number of backlinks gained or lost over time.

Refining your SEO strategy

If your analysis shows certain tactics aren’t yielding desired results, it’s time to revisit your SEO strategy. Conduct a market research or competitive benchmarking study to see where you stand relative to similar businesses. Build or refine your link building process—be it guest blogging, resource pages, or broken link building. Consistent adjustments ensure you remain adaptive to search engine changes and industry shifts.

Best practices for long-term backlink building

Focus on relevance and quality

High-quality, relevant backlinks from credible websites in your niche consistently outperform large quantities of random, irrelevant links. Prioritize forging relationships with influential sites and platforms where your content can genuinely contribute to the conversation.

Create high-value, link-worthy content

Regularly publish main content that is thorough, accurate, and engaging. Over time, such content naturally attracts editorial backlinks from fellow websites seeking high-quality references. Case studies, infographics, and pillar content that delve deep into specific topics can establish you as an industry leader, driving more sites that link to you.

Stay current with Google’s algorithm updates

Google’s algorithm updates can alter how search engines view and rank backlinks. Stay informed about changes like the shift toward mobile-friendly websites, structured data, and page load speed optimization. Balancing on-page SEO improvements with a robust off-page SEO strategy ensures your site remains competitive in organic search results.

Build relationships and community

Fostering genuine connections with thought leaders, influencers, and other website owners can lead to mutually beneficial earning backlinks. Engaging in community forums, contributing to discussions, and offering your expertise can all open doors to natural link building. As your brand’s credibility grows, more sites that link will reference your work, reinforcing your authority further.

No matter what they say, backlinks are important

Backlinks are fundamental to how search engines interpret and rank webpages. They convey trust, expertise, and relevance—factors that drastically influence your website’s performance in Google Search.

Whether you’re a small local business or a global e-commerce enterprise, adopting a robust strategy to build backlinks can significantly bolster your visibility in search, search engine ranking, and overall digital presence.

A well-rounded, long-term approach to link building involves:

Crafting valuable, evergreen content that naturally attracts mentions.

Reaching out via guest blogging, influencer outreach, and broken link building.

Monitoring your backlink profile regularly to weed out toxic backlinks.

Adapting to the latest Google’s algorithm updates and SEO best practices.

When executed correctly, a solid backlink strategy will not only amplify your search rankings and credibility but also drive a steady flow of organic search results and referral traffic. In an era when competition for top SERP positions is fiercer than ever, backlinks are so important because they stand as enduring tokens of trust and authority—keys to unlocking sustained online success.

In today’s digital age, being visible online is no longer a luxury but a necessity. SEO has become a key tool for increasing your business visibility, attracting new clients, and achieving sustainable growth. A quality SEO strategy not only improves your website’s ranking on search engines like Google but also strengthens your brand and builds user trust.

However, you face an important decision: should you hire a professional agency to implement your SEO strategy or rely on a freelance SEO specialist? Both choices have their advantages and disadvantages, and the decision can significantly impact the success of your online efforts.

Advantages of working with a professional SEO agency

The best SEO agency uses advanced tools and technologies

Professional SEO agencies have access to advanced tools such as Ahrefs and SEMrush, which enable detailed analysis of your website and competition. These tools provide insight into keywords, backlinks, competitor analysis, search engine rankings, and user behavior, which is essential for effective optimization and achieving better results.

Continuous support and communication

Collaborating with an SEO agency ensures constant availability of a team of experts ready to respond to your inquiries and adapt the strategy to your needs. Quick communication and transparency in work allow for timely adjustments and ensure you’re always up to date with the progress of your SEO campaign.

Proven methods and strategies

SEO agencies follow the latest industry trends and changes in Google algorithms, allowing them to apply best practices and innovative strategies. Experience in working with different clients enables them to quickly recognize what works and adjust tactics to achieve optimal results in search engine rankings.

A team of experienced SEO experts for all aspects of optimization

Within an SEO agency, a diverse team of experts specializes in various aspects of optimization:

Technical SEO optimization: Experts who deal with the technical aspects of your website to ensure speed, security, and proper indexing.

On-page SEO: Optimization of content, meta tags, and page structure for better ranking.

Off-page SEO: Building quality backlinks and reputation management.

Content strategy: Creating relevant and valuable content that attracts and retains visitors.

This multidisciplinary approach ensures that all aspects of your SEO campaign are covered professionally.

Scalability of services and adaptation to specific needs

SEO agencies have the capacity to adapt their services to the size and needs of your business. Whether you run a small local business or a large corporation, an agency can scale its services to match your goals and budget. For example, they can launch a local SEO campaign focused on a specific region or a national campaign for a broader market.

Strategic approach to optimization for long-term results

Professional agencies work based on long-term strategies that ensure stable and lasting results. By following continuous changes in Google algorithms and SEO trends, they can adjust their tactics to keep your page ranking high. This strategic approach minimizes the risk of dropping in search results and ensures sustainable growth.

Freelance SEO specialist: Limitations and risks

Although hiring a freelance SEO specialist may seem like an economical and flexible option, it’s important to be aware of certain limitations and risks that can affect the success of your SEO campaign.

Risk of lack of specialized knowledge in all areas of SEO

SEO is a complex field encompassing multiple disciplines such as technical optimization, content marketing, link building, and data analysis. A freelance SEO specialist may be proficient in one or several of these areas, but rarely possesses in-depth knowledge in all segments. This can result in a lack of a comprehensive strategy that is necessary for achieving optimal results on search engines.

Less availability and support

Unlike agencies that have a team of experts available at all times, a freelancer may be limited by their time and resources. This can lead to communication and availability issues, especially at crucial moments when quick reaction or strategy adjustment is needed. If the freelancer works on multiple projects simultaneously, your SEO campaign may not receive the attention it deserves.

Potential issues with reliability and meeting deadlines

Reliance on one person carries risks related to reliability and meeting deadlines. Illness, personal problems, or overload can affect the freelancer’s ability to complete tasks on time. The lack of an internal quality control and supervision system, as exists in agencies, can lead to oversights that negatively impact your SEO strategy.

Limited resources and narrow specialization

Freelancers often don’t have access to advanced SEO tools like Ahrefs, SEMrush, or advanced versions of Google Analytics, which can limit the depth and quality of analysis. Also, their narrow specialization means they may not be able to provide comprehensive services needed for a successful SEO campaign, such as detailed technical optimization or complex backlink building strategies.

Lack of team support and scalability

For larger projects or those requiring rapid escalation, a freelancer may be overwhelmed and unable to meet all requirements. Without team support, it’s difficult to simultaneously manage different aspects of SEO, which can lead to delays or inadequate performance. The limited capacities of freelancers can pose a significant risk to your business, especially if quick reactions to market changes or search engine algorithm updates are needed.

How to choose between an SEO agency and a freelance SEO specialist

Assessing the size and needs of your business

The first step is to realistically assess the size and complexity of your business. If you run a larger company or have a complex website with high traffic, working with an SEO agency is often the better choice.

Agencies have the capacity and resources to manage large projects, providing comprehensive services that cover all aspects of search engine optimization. On the other hand, if you’re a small company or startup with limited budget and less complex needs, a freelance SEO specialist might be an adequate option.

Budget for SEO services

The financial aspect plays a significant role in the decision between an agency and a freelancer. Working with an SEO agency usually requires a larger investment but brings greater value through access to a wide range of services, advanced tools, and a team of experts.

Freelancers can offer lower prices, which may be attractive to companies with limited budgets. However, it’s important to consider the price-to-quality ratio. Investing in a quality SEO strategy often brings a higher return through increased organic traffic.

Long-term goals and strategies

If your business goals are focused on long-term growth and stable market positioning, an SEO agency can provide the necessary strategic support. Agencies are equipped to develop and implement long-term SEO strategies, tracking changes in Google algorithms and adapting to new trends.

Freelancers are often focused on short-term goals or specific tasks, which can be limiting if you’re looking for lasting results and continuous growth.

Additional factors to consider

Industry and competition: In highly competitive industries, a more advanced and sophisticated approach that an agency can provide is needed.

Time and resources: If you have limited time to manage the project, an agency can take over the entire process, freeing you up for other business activities.

Personalized approach: Freelancers can offer a more individualized approach and greater flexibility, which can be useful for specific projects or niches.

SEO agency – a reliable partner for search engine growth

In the world of digital marketing, an SEO agency represents a reliable partner that can significantly contribute to the growth and success of your business on search engines. Through this article, we have highlighted the key benefits of collaborating with a professional agency:

Teamwork: A multidisciplinary team of experts ensures a comprehensive approach to optimization, covering all aspects from technical SEO optimization to content strategy.

Advanced tools: Agencies use top-notch SEO tools like Google Analytics, Ahrefs, and SEMrush, enabling detailed analysis and effective strategy implementation.

Adaptability: Scalable services that can be tailored to the specific needs and goals of your business, regardless of the size and scope of the project.

Continuity: A long-term strategic approach that ensures stable results and continuous monitoring of changes in Google algorithms and SEO trends.

Choosing an SEO agency can be a crucial step towards achieving better search engine rankings, increasing organic traffic, and realizing your business goals. Quality search engine optimization requires expertise, resources, and experience that a professional agency can provide, giving you a competitive edge in the dynamic digital environment.

An SEO agency is a specialized company that provides Search Engine Optimization services to improve the visibility and ranking of clients’ websites in search results. These agencies play a crucial role in digital marketing, offering the expertise and resources necessary for effectively managing companies’ online presence.

Comprising teams of digital marketing experts, SEO agencies offer a wide range of services, including on-page and off-page optimization, technical SEO analysis, keyword research, content creation, and quality backlink building. Their primary goal is to increase organic traffic to clients’ websites, enhance brand visibility, and ultimately contribute to business growth.

What services SEO agencies provide to improve online visibility?

SEO agencies provide a comprehensive range of services to their clients:

On-site optimization

Keyword research

Optimization of meta tags (titles, descriptions)

Improvement of URL structure

Optimization of internal linking

Improvement of user experience (UX)

Implementation of structured data

Off-site optimization

Building quality backlinks

Managing online reputation

Local SEO

Optimization of Google Business profile

Increasing visibility on Google Maps

Technical optimization

Increase of loading speed

Optimization for mobile devices

Solving indexing problems

Optimization of sitemap

Resolving duplicate content

SEO copywriting

Creating high-quality, relevant content

Optimization of existing content

Content strategy development aligned with SEO goals

Creating content tailored to user intentions

Why is SEO crucial for the success of online business?

A well-optimized website significantly increases organic traffic, enabling more potential customers to find content through search engines, thus enhancing visibility and reach. SEO strategies focus on improving user experience, directly affecting conversion rates. Visitors who find relevant and useful content are more likely to become customers or clients.

SEO also builds brand credibility and authority. Highly ranked pages are perceived as more trustworthy and relevant in their industry, leading to increased user trust and potentially more recommendations and backlinks.

Moreover, SEO provides long-term results with a better return on investment compared to paid advertising. Maintaining a high ranking often requires fewer resources than continuously paying for ads. SEO also aids in understanding the market through keyword analysis and user behavior, allowing for adjustments to business strategy.

In today’s competitive digital environment, SEO has become essential for maintaining competitiveness. Companies neglecting SEO risk losing significant market share to competitors who actively optimize their online presence.

Can a small SEO agency provide the same quality as a large company?

Small SEO agencies can provide equal or even higher quality service compared to large companies. The key factor that allows small agencies to compete with larger ones is their flexibility and ability to adapt quickly to changes in the industry. SEO is a dynamic field that is constantly evolving, and smaller agencies can implement new strategies and techniques more rapidly.

A personalized approach is another significant advantage of small SEO agencies. Clients often have direct contact with experienced professionals working on their projects, which allows for better communication and understanding of specific business needs. This level of attention is difficult to achieve in large corporations where clients may be just one of many.

Finally, smaller agencies often have lower overhead costs, allowing them to offer more competitive prices without compromising service quality. This is particularly attractive for small and medium-sized businesses seeking top-tier SEO services within a limited budget.

The most common SEO mistakes companies make?

Common SEO mistakes include neglecting keyword research, which leads to targeting irrelevant or overly competitive terms. Companies often overestimate the importance of certain keywords while ignoring long-tail phrases that can bring higher-quality traffic.

Technical SEO is another critical area where businesses falter. Many fail to properly structure their websites, resulting in indexing and crawling issues. Key elements such as proper use of meta tags, page load speed optimization, and implementation of schema markup are frequently overlooked.

Lack of quality content is a prevalent mistake. Companies often produce generic or duplicated material, underestimating the importance of unique, informative, and relevant content for SEO success. Related to this is the absence of a link-building strategy, where businesses either completely neglect this aspect or employ outdated and potentially harmful tactics.

Ignoring local SEO is also common. Many businesses fail to optimize their Google Business profiles and do not focus on locally relevant keywords and content, which is crucial for enterprises with physical locations.

Long-term benefits of collaborating with a professional SEO agency

Collaborating with a professional SEO agency brings numerous long-term benefits for businesses. Agency experts continuously monitor search engine trends and algorithms, enabling the implementation of the latest SEO strategies. This approach ensures sustainable growth in organic visibility and website traffic over an extended period.

Long-term collaboration also allows the agency to thoroughly understand the client’s business and develop customized strategies that align with business goals. Additionally, relying on SEO experts frees up internal resources, enabling companies to focus on their core competencies.

The holy grail of any SEO optimization is finding keywords with a large number of monthly searches and little competition. While the volume of searches can be read relatively accurately from many SEO tools, assessing how difficult a keyword is to rank is not simple.

Why is it easier to research search volume compared to determining keyword difficulty?

The exact number of monthly searches for a query is recorded by Google, which can provide data on the search volume of any term.

There are many factors that affect keyword difficulty, including the pages that rank for it, the number of pages that are ranking, the number of backlinks the ranking pages have, and how well the ranking pages match the user’s intent.

Hetre are some methods how to evaluate keyword difficulty.

„allintitle:” operator

This search operator is designed to filter Google search results and only present those pages that contain a specific term in their title. For instance, if you enter the query “allintitle: seo agency hrvatska,” the search results will display all pages with any combination of seo, agency, or hrvatska in their title, including subpages.

What’s best is that Google will also write above the results the number of pages it found. And that’s your competition.

The assumption is that pages that want to rank for a particular keyword will put that word in the title. It’s an SEO standard that, although completely logical, is rarely followed.

Number of backlinks

Backlinks are considered to be one of the most crucial ranking factors for a website. There are different categories of backlinks, namely good, bad, and harmful. However, it is impossible to evaluate the importance of a site’s backlink profile without having knowledge of the search engine’s algorithm, which is kept secret.

What we can do is to assess the strength of a webpage’s profile by counting the backlinks leading to it. More advanced SEO tools can help us with this.

When you search for a particular keyword, you may notice information beside the search volume that pertains to “keyword difficulty”, “seo difficulty”, or something equivalent. This information indicates the number of backlinks that the page in the top position for that keyword has.

Many SEO specialists do not believe that evaluating the difficulty of a keyword solely based on the number of backlinks is effective. This is because these tools do not consider important factors such as the quality of backlinks or content. However, it is still a relevant factor when estimating a keyword difficulty. Ultimately, it depends on many factors, and the number of backlinks is just one of them.

The types of pages that rank

There are different websites, and the search engine may prefer a specific type. For instance, if you notice that online stores appear at the top of the search engine results page (SERP), and you are not an online store, ranking well in that particular search result won’t be easy.

Search engines tend to favour websites that specialize in a particular field and demonstrate expert knowledge. In contrast, forums and news portals are not considered specialized sites. However, if you notice that one or more forums or portals rank for a specific search query, it can be an opportunity to outrank them.

Tools such as Low Fruits can assess a particular domain’s strength. However, the relevance and accuracy of this number is often uncertain. Typically, this indicates the strength of the backlink profile. Although it may not be entirely precise, selecting a keyword ranked by sites with a lower domain rating is recommended.

Authority of ranking websites

This is very logical, but it doesn’t hurt to mention it. Don’t expect to surpass brands and sites that are authorities in that area, even if they appear in the first ten results.

Check basic SEO parameters

Browser add-ons, such as Meta SEO Inspector, can instantly evaluate whether a web page has undergone basic optimization. If the H tags are not properly arranged, the images lack alt text, and the structure is unclear or does not follow a hierarchy, the page is at risk of being outranked by competitors.

Do the pages correspond to the user’s intention

It is likely that someone who searches for “seo optimization price” needs a service or agency. If search results display pages that only define SEO or provide SEO strategies, there is an opportunity for another page to offer services.

Number of visitors

Pages with low traffic are not competitive; if your query includes them, that keyword has potential.

Price per click

SEO tools provide insight into the value of keywords based on their PPC cost. Higher PPC costs indicate greater difficulty in ranking for those keywords.

Competiton analysis

If you have a valuable client, it’s worth analysing their competitors thoroughly. You should identify where their rivals are getting backlinks from, assess the optimisation level on their sites, evaluate their content quality and whether it aligns with the user’s intent. If you discover a site that is not competitive, it may be a good opportunity to replace it with your client’s site.

Use tools

Compared to a thorough analysis of the competition, which is a time-consuming but accurate process, keyword research tools provide a quick outcome. These tools usually have an in-built feature to estimate the keyword difficulty using their calculation method. This is a convenient solution for those who are short on time or lack the motivation to do a detailed analysis.

From general to more specific

My advice for the process of assessing keyword difficulty would be:

Enter a keyword in a tool to see volume and estimated difficulty. Choose keywords with the best ratio and lowest cost per click.

Refine your keyword search further using Google Operators and select the variations with the least number of websites.

Choose keywords for which low-authority pages in the top 10 rankings appear.

Analyze the competition for your remaining keywords.

At the end of this process, you will have a keyword that you can expect to rank in the top ten.

Keywords form the basis of SEO optimization, which is a crucial aspect of online visibility. Search engines aim to present users with the most relevant content that matches their search query. Since textual keywords are used to describe content, whether in text, images or videos, it is essential to learn how to conduct effective keyword research to improve your online presence.

What are keywords?

Keywords are terms used to help a page rank higher in search results.

When a client asks me if they will be in the first position on Google, I always assure them that they will be. After we complete the optimization process, I can guarantee that their brand will be in position 1 when people search for it on the search engine.

The question is, how many people search for the brand every month?

What keywords are we looking for?

• For which the site can realistically rank
• Which have high monthly search volume and low keyword difficulty
• Which bring clients to website
• Which represent what is website all about
• Keywords connected with the one we want to rank for

The aim of keyword research

The main objective of search engine optimization (SEO) is to establish a website as an authority in a particular niche. To achieve this, it is crucial to understand the terminology used in that niche. This is where keyword research comes into play. The aim of keyword research is to discover all the relevant terms related to the niche and incorporate them into the website content in the most effective way possible.

An equally important goal is to step into the potential client’s shoes and find out what term would attract them to the site and how to respond to their needs.

Finding the main keyword

I use Ahrefs for research because I’m familiar with it. Although it’s expensive, it provides good quality work. Semrush is another good option, but it also comes with a high price tag. If you’re looking for something cheaper, Mangools or Ubersuggest are viable alternatives, but they have fewer options. On the other hand, Google Keyword Planner is a free tool that you can use as well.

In most cases, the homepage is optimized first. It is the page that visitors see first and on it they get information what the website is actually about.

Suppose we aim to rank the website of an SEO agency. The initial keyword that strikes our mind to rank the homepage is “SEO”. However, the question is whether the people who type “SEO” in a search engine actually intend to buy an optimization service?

Probably not. Rather, they are more likely to be interested in general information about what SEO is. This can be seen in the search engine results page (SERP) as Google offers content for this query that defines the term itself. Moreover, it is very challenging to rank for that term.

Let’s input the term “seo” into one of our tools and explore related terms. But first, we need to filter out any terms related to Koreans who have the habit of naming their children Seo.

Upon analysis, we have identified several more suitable options for the website of an SEO agency, like “SEO agency”, “SEO services”, “SEO marketing” or “SEO company”. These keywords are more specific, accurately reflect the user’s purpose, and are comparatively easier to rank with a sizeable search volume.

For each of them, we should determine how strong the competition is and find one with the best ratio of competition and search volume.

Voila! The main keyword for the page is here. In this case, my favorite would be “seo agency”.

Support keywords for other landing pages

While we are in our preferred SEO tool, we can easily access a list of all the terms related to “SEO”. Ahrefs, for example, displays most of these terms on the left-hand side of the screen, making it a simple task to compile a list.

Competition analysis tools like Neuronwriter can be a great source of terms as they help us identify the terms used by our competitors. Additionally, we can study the terms for which our competitors are ranked and the topics they write about, and take advantage of features such as Google auto-complete, People Also Asked, and related searches. Reddit and other forums can also be useful in determining what people are discussing.

Long – tail keywords

Long-tail keywords are search phrases that consist of more than two words. For example, “basics of keyword research” is a long-tail keyword. Although they have low search volumes, they also have less competition. Long-tail keywords are very specific and are usually used by people with a clear intention in mind. By using long-tail keywords, we can target a specific group of people who are more likely to be interested in our content.

Keyword clustering

And now that we have a massive pool of keywords, it is necessary to somehow group them into meaningful clusters connected by a common theme. This way we get groups of words that we can use to write blogs.

It’s a good idea to use interesting keywords for new landing pages. For instance, “local SEO” can be a suitable landing page because many people want their businesses to be visible on maps and accessible to clients in a particular area. Adding a “Local SEO” category in the site menu can attract the attention of both search engines and visitors.

It’s not easy, but it is necessary

Finding and grouping hundreds or thousands of keywords, even with the help of a tool, can be a challenging task. However, once you have completed this task, you will have a valuable source of knowledge about a specific niche. It’s not necessary to conduct all the research at once. You can gradually enter the area that the website wants to dominate and become familiar with the material. Success will eventually follow.
